Galway Flashmob Shop St Saturday 13th March 2010

After several weeks of rehearsal, (pictured, right) the Galway Flash Mob crew took to the High Street on Saturday March 13th, right outside McCambridges, opposite Zhivago Records. Having been alerted in advance, and armed with a video camera, I went hunting for the best vantage point to record the event for posterity. The question was, should I go for street level, or should I try and get up high? With minutes to go, I headed upstairs to Lynches Café, only to find the best vantage spot at the window already occupied by a video crew. So upstairs again to the toilets, and this time I found a perch with a birds-eye view!
At the appointed hour, 2.00pm, the music started to blast out – and I mean blast! It was loud, for sure! Scanning the street with my camera hanging out the top of the window, I quickly spotted the first dancer move into position, and start her moves, startling a few onlookers. This dance thing is nothing if not contagious, seconds later she was joined by a second, then third, then a flood of dancers, all perfectly synchronised.
Looking back at the video now, it's fun to see the response of the many innocent bystanders who suddenly found themselves caught up in a real live dance mob. Some ran for their lives, while some others decided it looked easy and so joined in, hopelessly out of time and out of synch with the music but, none the less, adding to the fun with their own unique contributions...
Keep an eye out for the guy in the red and black jacket at 1.42 who gave it his very best shot, even though he never saw the dance before. He even contributed his own little shimmy at 2.24
The guy is obviously a great sport!
Spot the bald-headed security guy at 1.43, upper centre, and again at 3.03, mixing business with pleasure...
The video was posted to YouTube later on Saturday evening, and in the first 4 days has been viewed a amazing 6,224 times. A search on YouTube reveals at least 5 more videos, all taken from different viewpoints, and all adding to the record of the day. Well done and thanks to LadyPennyworth, dilallio, CarnivalCity, melmullarkey and Mebeconor
A big thank you to the organisers who put so much time and effort into the event, you brought excitement and smiles to a whole lot of people, and in these times, that stands as quite an achievement.
My video of the Galway Flash Mob is at
March 19th – The Official video has just been posted.
It's pretty damn good – and it's in High Definition! (I'm only a little bit jealous...)
